Milk Baths with babies and Kath V

Although all the work I show you guys is focused on maternity, believe it or not I do photograph other subjects too including babies at six months, one, two and three years old.

I lucky enough to attend the Baby Art Studios conference in Ipswich where Kathy V (an Australian baby photographer) put on a workshop for photographers to learn more about babies’ six-month photoshoots.

You will not believe how adorable the baby models were: they had such cheeky personalities, always smiling for the camera! Kath V showed us styling techniques including Christmas setups and camera angles such as shooting from above to capture those puppy dog eyes.

One of my favourite setups Kath V showed us was the Instagram famous milk bath, where babies play in a bath of a mix of milk and water with fruits. The colour from the fruit allows the photograph to be vibrant against the white milk and bath creating a colourful and fun photoshoot. If you are thinking of photographing your child in a milk bath don’t be fooled by the fun ‘colour pop’ of yellow a lemon provides as this will curdle the milk- gross! I’d recommend using strawberries, oranges and blueberries as these give the vibrant colour explosion without curdling the milk!

Another set up Kath V showed us was a flower nest, designed to be changeable depending on the gender of the baby or mum’s colour preference. It is simply a small nest made of brown twigs into which the photographer can insert their own flowers; I’d recommend hydrangeas as this fills the nest up more and also the placing of a fluffy blanket which protects the baby from scratching and aesthetically looks much better. With the nest, I found it often falls over when the baby is moving around in it therefore, placing a weight under the blanket helps keep the baby safe.

Overall, I really enjoyed the workshop and I now have new ideas for my own photography. So get out there everybody don’t be afraid to experiment- just make sure baby is safe!
